Chemistry is often described as the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. A chemical reaction is a process in which substances, known as reactants, are transformed into new substances, called products. These transformations are governed by the rearrangement of atoms and the breaking and forming of chemical bonds (For example, when hydrogen gas reacts with oxygen gas, water is produced. This can be represented by the following chemical equation: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O In this equation, H₂ and O₂ are the reactants, and H₂O is the product. Acid base and salts
Substances can be broadly classified into 3 categories based on their chemical properties: acids, bases, and salts. Acids are those substances which are sour in taste, can turn blue litmus paper red, and release hydrogen ions when dissolved in water. bases are substances that taste bitter, can turn red litmus paper blue, and release hydroxide ions when dissolved in water.
